SERVICES FOR SENSORY IMPAIRED

SICIL has an established program of services for people who are sensory impaired. Accommodations are in place to insure that all consumers may benefit from any service described in the Independent Living Program. Additional services include the following.

ITAC Phone Distribution
SICIL is the local service site for the free phone distribution program offered to Illinoisians who are deaf, hard of hearing, late deafened, speech impaired, or deaf/blind. SICIL provides amplifield phones, CapTel phones, and Braille phones to those individuals whose hearing loss can be verified by by physician.

Elderly Blind Program
Our Elderly Blind Program serves people 55 years or older who are blind or visually impaired, including those with macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, or cataracts. We offer an array of adaptive devices - magnifiers, large-print aids, talking watches, talking books, radios for the visually impaired, and mobility products - that help visually impaired individuals remain in their homes. Training on the use of the equipment is available at no cost. SICIL also hosts a monthly Blind Support Group, which is open to all visually impaired adults and their families.

Deaf Culture & Language Training
SICIL provides presentations and workshops in schools and for police and fire personnel, employers, and any other group wishing to acquire basic sign language skills or a better understanding of deaf culture.
