Services to the Elderly Blind Include:
Clinical and functional assessments when needed in the selection of proper aides or devices that may help the consumer get maximum use out of the sight that he/she has left.
Provision of assistive devices and aids, and training in the proper use of the equipment selected, in order to maximize use of residual sight.
Training to build skills necessary for self-sufficiency in the home and around the community such as cooking, makeup application/shaving, housekeeping, money recognition, reading, time telling, handwriting, and more.
Monthly support group meeting with others with low vision and their families as well as individual counseling to help cope with the loss of vision.
Information on issues relating to loss of sight, and referral when necessary to resources that may be of assistance either in support of or in addition to SICIL services.
Services to Persons Who are Experiencing Loss of Hearing:
Communication barriers have been removed to assure that consumers may benefit from any individual service that they may select as described in the individual service selection of this brochure. Additionally, SICIL serves as a testing and selection center for the Illinois Telecommunication Access Corporation(ITAC), where persons who are not able to hear of their regular phone system may come in, view, test, and select and amplified or modified phone at no charge to them.
